67's lose their captain, but rally to win 3-2 in the shootout
Travis Barron was the Ottawa 67’s game hero as the lone scorer in a 5-round 3-2 shootout victory over the Peterborough Petes. Leo Lazarev made 34 saves and added 5 saves in the shootout in the winning cause.
Lazarev was sharp in the first period, stopping at 15 shots
fired his way and keeping his team in the game. However, his play was overshadowed
by an incident involving his teammate.
Just 3 games after a questionable slew-foot suspension on
overage defenseman Mike Vlajkov, the Ottawa 67’s may see their best player,
Travis Konecny, fate.
Konecny made a routine hit on Kyle Jenkins late in the first
period causing Jenkins to fall along the boards. The play resulted in a match
penalty for slew-footing. His match penalty comes with an automatic one game
suspension and could be reviewed for further disciplinary action.
Tallying eight points in his four games prior to tonight,
Konecny was back making a key impact on his team. With him out for the
remainder of the game and a lengthy power play that ensued, the Petes
capitalized on their opportunity drawing first blood early in the second period.
Dominik Masin jumped in from the point, picked up a rebound and shot the puck
past Lazarev.
The 67’s responded just over 4 minutes later off a nice fed
from Brendan Bell to Jeremiah Addison in front of the net. Unmanned, Addison
snuck in and made no mistake to get the 67’s on the board and tie the game at
1.
The Petes regained their lead after Steven Lorentz was able
to fight off traffic in front of the net and blast a one-timer behind Lazarev
for a late 2-1 second period lead.
Shots were 27-14 in favor of Peterborough after the first 40
minutes. Lazarev had to come up with some big saves at the end of the period to
keep it a 1 goal lead.
Midway through the third, Brendan Bell tied the game at 2. Bell
scored top shelf on the bankhand after unintentionally fanning on the puck making
it look as a fake shot. Bell was involved in all areas of the game tonight. In
addition to the goal and the assist, he rounded out the Gordie Howe hatrick with
a fight midway through the second period.
Neither team were able to resolve anything through the rest
of the game and the extra end, so the game was sent to a shootout. Lazarev
stopped all 5 shooters including leading scorer Josh MacDonald and Sabres
prospect Eric Cornel. Mancina came up one save short which happened to be
Travis Barron’s game winner in the 5th round snapping a 67’s two
game losing streak.
The win gives Ottawa a 4 point lead on the Belleville Bulls for
4th spot in the Eastern Conference while the Bulls hold a game in
hand.
A quick turnaround time and the 67’s and Petes are back at
it again to wrap up their home-and-home in Ottawa at 2pm.
