Knights top line puts up another dozen points on Ottawa

The 67's did everything in their power to avoid another 12-point performance from London's top line but couldn't do anything to prevent a repeat performance.

London's three-headed monster of Mitch Marner, Christian Dvorak and Matthew Tkachuk, who combined for a dozen points when the teams met in December, did likewise in a 5-1 London win this afternoon.

"They beat us up last time and they beat us up today pretty good too," said Jeff Brown.  "When it's special teams, we're allowing them to play pond hockey, and they're a team that you can't play river hockey with."

Ottawa did manage to slow the pace down through 20 minutes and keep it tight, and they did outshoot the Knights, but a 4-for-6 London powerplay did them in.

"I don't know about some of those penalties, but at the end of the day you can't give the ref a chance to make calls like that," adds the bench boss, who saw Jeremiah Addison take a roughing penalty after their lone goal and Connor Graham sit 17 minutes for instigating a fight.

Matchup Game

Ottawa's top pairing of Jake Middleton and Nevin Guy combined for 16 even-strength shifts, 12 of them against Tkachuk-Dvorak-Marner.

London's top line only had three even-strength shifts away from them, and had two breakaways on them.

"5-on-5 I thought they did well," added Brown, also mentioning he didn't have a go-to shutdown unit up front.

With the lack of recent secondary scoring, the 67's know that their top line will likely be on the receiving end of such treatment down the stretch.

They also aren't likely to play too many more lines as dynamic as the one they saw this afternoon.

67's snap 4-game winless streak with big 8-2 win over the Wolves

In a night that paid tribute to boys of fall before the game, it was the boys of winter that took over the front stage. Jeremiah Addison scored 2 goals and added an assist to lead the Ottawa 67’s to an 8-2 victory over the visiting Sudbury Wolves. The 67’s hope to accomplish what the Ottawa RedBlacks did in the playoffs last season and that’s to make it to the championship finals. This win snaps their 4-game winless streak and gets them one step closer to the playoffs.

67's fall 4-1 to the IceDogs, drop 4th straight

After a leak inside the arena forced the hockey game to be postponed on Saturday, the Ottawa 67’s were back in action tonight to host the Niagara Ice Dogs for the final time this season.

Brendan Perlini scored two goals and added an assist to lead his Niagara IceDogs to a 4-1 victory over the home team Ottawa 67s. The two Eastern Conference rivals are almost neck-in-neck in the standings and fighting for the same goal. With the win, Niagara leap frogs Ottawa in the standings and sit in a 3-way tie for 4th in the East, while the 67’s drop to 7th.

General disappointment for 67's in 2-1 loss to Oshawa

In their second-to-last meeting of the regular season, the visiting 67’s fell 2-1 to the Oshawa Generals in overtime Sunday evening.

Oshawa captain Anthony Cirelli beat 67’s goalie Leo Lazarev just 24 seconds into overtime, giving the Generals their first win against the 67’s in seven games so far this season.

Cirelli had been controlling the play for a few seconds, moving swiftly around and then past Nathan Todd before skating up to the net and flicking the puck past Lazarev.

But Lazarev’s 31-save performance still earned him second star of the game.

The 67’s struggled offensively, with 11 fewer shots than the Generals, testing Jeremy Brodeur 22 times throughout the night, beating him only once.

With Domenic Commisso and Jalen Smereck in the box, leaving the Generals down two men, Todd blasted a shot past Brodeur from the right face-off circle.

Assists went to Evan de Haan and Dante Salituro, tying the game at 1 before the end of the second.

The Generals’ win wasn’t the only first celebrated at the General Motors Centre on Sunday.

Seventeen-year-old forward Brock Welsh – playing in just his sixth game – scored his first OHL-career goal 4:14 into the second period. The goal put the Generals on the board first.

The 67’s now sit in sixth place in the OHL’s Eastern conference, with 61 points. The Generals are two spots and 12 points back, tied with the Hamilton Bulldogs at 49 points, fighting for the eighth playoff spot.

The two teams will face each other for their eighth match up on March 20th, the final game of the regular season for both teams. The game will be played at the General Motors Centre in Oshawa.

The 67’s next game will be played tomorrow, February 22 at TD Place Arena at 7:00pm against the seventh place Niagara Ice Dogs. The game is a result of Saturday’s postponed game after a leaky roof caused unsafe ice conditions.

OSEG has announced fans’ Saturday tickets will be honoured at Monday’s game, and those who had tickets for Saturday’s matchup will also get to attend one other regular season game free of charge.

The game is an important one for Ottawa, with Niagara only one point behind in the standings.

The 67’s have 11 games remaining in the regular season, and currently boast a 29-25-3 record.

Brown: OHL nepotism solely an ownership issue

Wouldn't it be a dream scenario for fans if the 67's could get another elite center?

Perhaps a skilled, big-bodied player who could shelter some top-pairing duties away from Dante Salituro and give the 67's an unrivaled 1-2 punch down the middle of the ice.

With 18 picks in the second- and third-rounds between now and 2020, they would probably have enough value to acquire a player like a Logan Brown.

Fluke goal drops Lazarev on Mrazek night

Most nights, the saves that Leo Lazarev made would've been enough to keep his team in it, but against the conference-leader Frontenacs, a couple of fluke goals did him in.

With Petr Mrazek watching Lazarev, now the only European goalie in the OHL, a knuckleball shot from Chad Duchesne tied the game in the second and a dribbler, credited to Spencer Watson, proved to be the game winner.

67's come up short in 3-2 loss against the Battalion

After gutting out a 4-3 overtime win against the North Bay Battalion just 6 days ago, the Ottawa 67’s tried to repeat their winning ways against the Battalion again in a special afternoon matinee that had a high impact in the Eastern Conference standings.

But the Battalion had their own plan. Mike Amadio, who has been on fire recently, scored a pair of goals to lead his team to a 3-2 regulation victory sending 4,559 Ottawa fans home disappointed.

Dad comes out on top in Battle of the Browns

It was a family affair at TD Place Arena Sunday afternoon as the Ottawa 67’s defeated the Windsor Spitfires 2-1 in a chippy game.

Ottawa head coach Jeff Brown’s son, Logan Brown, plays for the rival Spitfires.

The 17-year-old forward, in his second OHL season, has played 44 games and earned himself 49 points so far. But the younger Brown was kept at bay by the 67’s in Sunday’s matchup.

“He didn’t have an opportunity to be offensive,” said coach Brown of his son’s play.

“Our guys did a great job neutralizing him,” he added.

Ottawa captain Jake Middleton was part of that effort, finding himself up against the younger Brown a few times throughout the game.

“I had to go against him all night and he’s so big and protects the puck so well,” said Middleton.

“It was a battle for sure,” he added.

A battle Middleton ultimately helped his team win, scoring the game-winner on a powerplay opportunity 4:21 into the third period.

He came up to Windsor Spitfires’ goaltender Michael DiPietro’s right just on time to tip in a pass from Dante Salituro.

The Spits were first on the board just over eight minutes into the game when Jalen Chatfield scored unassisted, giving Windsor a 1-0 lead they would hold onto for just 1:52 before a backhand by Artur Tyanulin evened up the score.

Middleton assisted on Tyanulin’s goal, earning him two points and second star of the game, a big night for the defenseman.

The game would stay tied through the next 34:24 minutes, leaving both teams frustrated at times.

“We weren’t taking it to them like we could have, so I thought if we could up the ante a little bit and battle a little harder, it would be a better outcome,” said Middleton.

“Fortunately, tonight that was the case.”

67’s goalie Leo Lazarev was awarded first star for his 26 save performance, while DiPietro stopped 18 of the 20 shots he faced on his end.
As for the battle of the Browns, it doesn’t get any easier for the 67’s head coach, no matter how many times the 67’s face his son.

“Of course you want him to be successful,” he said.

When asked if it’s harder on him or his son, Brown didn’t hesitate to say himself.

“He doesn’t care,” said the coach with a chuckle.

“He wants to beat the crap out of us, whereas I’d like him to have a little success too, while we beat them.”

Rymsha returns, 67's shutout Gens

Don't look now, but the 67's have pieced together three wins in a row and, more importantly, are starting to pick up what Jeff Brown is putting down.

Leo Lazarev had to be outstanding at times, but in a third period where the 67's and Generals traded chances, it was Ottawa's ability to outchance the Gens and clog up the neutral zone late that had their bench boss' blessing.

67's defeat Battalion 4-3 in overtime

Evan de Haan scored the game winning goal with 15.5 seconds left in the extra frame to lift the Ottawa 67’s to a 4-3 victory over the visiting North Bay Battalion on a rare Tuesday night game.

"Worst game of the year" sees three goal lead evaporate

Just when it looked like the Barberpoles were going to stroll to a convincing win over a lesser opponent, pad the stats and suffocate the opposition out of the game, they allowed a 3-0 lead to disappear in a gut-punch of a loss.
