Another Acquisition For The 67s

The 67s have acquired goaltender Matthew Spezza from the Kingston Frontenacs in exchange for future considerations. He will be playing Tier II, likely Lindsay, as the starter, according to Killer who was interviewed this morning on the TEAM 1200/Dave Gross and Garry Galley. Killer said that they decided to obtain another goaltender because of the trouble they ran into when Battochio was injured earlier in the season. They were not able to call up another goalie during that time, so while Guadagnolo took over as starter, the injured Battochio had to sit on the bench in case back-up was needed.

The press release from the 67s official site states:

The Ottawa 67’s have obtained 18 year old, Mississauga, Ontario native Matthew Spezza from the Kingston Frontenacs in exchange for future considerations.

Spezza will not be joining the Ottawa 67’s at the present time but will continue to develop in a Tier II league. "We will be watching his progress with great interest." Stated 67’s Head Coach and General Manager Brian Kilrea.

In 10 games this season with the Frontenacs, Spezza played 442 minutes and allowed 25 goals on 203 shots for a Goals Against Average of 3.39 and a .890 Save Percentage.

Matthew Spezza was an 8th Round Pick of the Brampton Battalion in the 2002 OHL Priority Selection. He is the younger brother of the Ottawa Senators' Jason Spezza.

And an article in the Ottawa Sun by Barre Campbell, Ottawa gets another Spezza; goalie dealt to 67's, takes this angle:

The 67's have no immediate plans to bring Spezza to town to serve as a third goalie behind Danny Battochio and Anthony Guadagnolo. But Spezza hopes it's sooner rather than later that he'll be in town, where he'll join his older sister who attends the University of Ottawa.

"Hopefully, the NHL season starts up soon so we'll all be there together," said Matthew in an interview from his Brampton home yesterday.

Jason Spezza, locked out of the NHL, is playing for the Senators' AHL affiliate in Binghamton. He leads the league in assists (35), and is tied with Yanick Lehoux of the Manchester Monarchs for most points (49).
