Powerplay Too Little Too Late vs. Petes

On a day where the 67’s had six powerplays, including a 5-on-3 and a five-minute man advantage, they couldn’t take advantage of their chances in a 7-4 loss to Peterborough on Sunday.

After surrendering three of four powerplay chances, the Petes scored three times in the third, as the 67’s were outscored by a combined 8-1 in third periods during this weekend three-in-three.

“It’s not that we change anything going into the third,” said Chris Byrne.  “We worked hard today, we had our chances, but we missed coverage and gave their top line a bit of room.  We made mistakes and the puck was in our net.”

Peterborough’s new top line of Hunter Garlent, Eric Cornel and Josh MacDonald combined for 11 points on the afternoon, with the latter completing a hattrick in the final minute of the final frame.

Erik Bradford continued his hot streak in a 67’s uniform by finishing a 2-on-1 rush just four minutes into the game, giving the home side the only lead they would have on the day.

Jonatan Tanus was ejected for a headshot on Tyler Hill, but Ottawa was unable to convert on the ensuing five-minute powerplay.

Hill later returned to the game.

Garlent and MacDonald scored in the back half of the opening period, while Cornel had a pair in the second, offsetting Brett Gustavsen’s 12th marker of the season.

Ryan Van Stralen added a pair of powerplay tallies, but wasn’t to be outdone by MacDonald, who buried two more.

Liam Herbst has now allowed 17 goals in two starts in an Ottawa uniform, but can’t be blamed for many of them, says Byrne.

“He's got lots to work on as a young goalie in the league.  But we like his attitude and his competitiveness.  We think he'll be the goalie of the future.”

He made 29 stops while Andrew D’Agostini made 30 for the win.

A Mississauga win pushes the 67’s four points behind them, still two points out of a playoff spot behind Niagara.

After hosting Kingston on Wednesday, Ottawa has a crack at both Mississauga and Niagara on the weekend.
