Brown squashes trade rumours as 67's fall 6-3 to the Petes

Before the game, Ottawa 67’s general manager and head coach, Jeff Brown, was adamant to squash any trade rumours surrounding team Captain and star forward Travis Konecny.
There’s no truth. I get a kick out of this kind of stuff that all the experts out there that start things like this. I’ve never talked to any other General Manager in the league about Travis Konecny. He’s an Ottawa 67. He was drafted here to be our leader and he is our leader and will continue to be our leader as long as I’m here.

“There’s no truth,” Brown told TSN1200’s Kenny Walls. “I’ve never talked to any other General Manager in the league about Travis Konecny. He’s an Ottawa 67. Konecny had been the subject of trade rumours from the beginning of the season. Brown’s strong statement suggests that his OHL career will remain in Ottawa as the team fights towards an OHL Championship and, ultimately, the Memorial Cup.

If it was any indication today, the 67’s have a long way to go. The 67’s continued their roadtrip in Peterborough dropping a 6-3 decision to the Petes tonight. Konecny was held off the scoresheet but Dante Salituro had a pair of goals in their first loss of their 6-game roadtrip.

Despite allowing 3 shots in the first 30 seconds, the 67’s got on the board first with Ben Fanjoy’s 5th of the season. Greg Betzold responded for the Petes 3 minutes later after his deflected shot went off of Salituro in front of the Ottawa net. Hunter Garlant and Eric Cornel  gave the Petes a 3-1 lead in the final  4 minutes of the opening frame.

“We’re having our own breakdowns. We are causing these goals ourselves,” said Travis Barron in a first intermission interview. “We’ve got to change it now before it gets worse.”

The 67’s fired 14 shots at Matthew Mancina in the Peterborough net in the second period, but only Dante Salituro was able to beat him on the powerplay. The 67’s clawed back within one.

The Petes quickly took back their 2-goal lead just 13 seconds into the third period from 2016 NHL draft prospect Jonathan Ang (eventual game winner). Salituro responded with his second of the game, but it wasn’t enough. The Petes added two more goals to secure the 6-3 win.

Leo Lazarev faced 38 shots and could not be blamed for all the goals. The most unfortunate of them all was the 6th goal where Brown called him off for the extra attacker. Just as he was skating to the bench, Adam Timleck forced a turnover in the 67’s zone and score on a wide open net.

With the loss, the 67’s fall to 2-1-0-0 on their 6-game roadtrip. They are idle until Saturday night when they travel back to Hamilton to face the Bulldogs. The 67’s wrap up their roadtrip in Oshawa on Sunday night.
