Mancari Makes his Mark...

...pun intended. From the Sabres web site:

NOTEBOOK: MANCARI, INJURIES AND THE BUFFALO BILLS Erin Pollina
Sabres.com Nov 24, 2008, 3:58 PM EST

If there were a bright spot for the Buffalo Sabres this weekend, it would have to be Mark Mancari.

In his second career call-up with the team, the winger tallied his first NHL goal and recorded 12 shots – including seven to lead the team against the Islanders on Saturday.

Keep it up Mark!!

Mancari earns Third Star...

...in Buffalo's shut-out loss to the Flyers. Here's the recap from NHL.com. Clearly he made good use of his 14:50 in ice time. He wore number 25 just like he did here.

Keep it up Mark!

Sabres Recall Mancari from Portland

Buffalo Sabres Nov 21, 2008, 11:50 AM EST
Mancari The Sabres have recalled RW Mark Mancari from the Portland Pirates of the American League.

Mancari (23 years old, 6’3”, 225 lbs.) is currently second in the AHL in scoring with 25 points (11+14) in 14 games. He has six multi-point games this season, including a five-point (3+2) outing in Portland’s season opener on Oct. 11 vs. Manchester. Mancari was named the AHL’s Player of the Week for the period ending Nov. 9, when he tallied eight points (4+4) in three games.

Mancari was Buffalo’s seventh-round choice (207th overall) in the 2004 Entry Draft.

Good luck Mark!! (and all the AHL call-ups that are carrying the burden of turning their dreadful mothership teams around - sigh!).

He's looking a tad scruffy in his pic - trying to look dangerous I suppose.

Check out his interview.

It Really is a Small World

You may recall a previous post that provided an update on former Ottawa 67s and Brad Bonello was among the players mentioned. At the time I noted that he was with the Texas Brahmas of the Central Hockey League (CHL).

Well, it turns out that the son of a colleague also plays in the professional minors. During the usual office hockey chat about her son she mentioned that Matt had moved from the Southern Professional Hockey League (SPHL) league champions Knoxville Ice Bears to the CHL Mississippi River Kings. We started chatting about the CHL and the great team names and I noted that a former Ottawa 67s was playing for the Texas team.

Today Matt's mom informed me that Brad Bonello was traded to the Mississippi River Kings. Brad has made a big impression on his new team - earning CHL weekly honors.

The world is indeed small. Which is why you shouldn't pick your nose in traffic - you never know who's in the vehicle next to you!

McGinn makes the bigs

A bit behind with my updates (I do have a life beyond hockey and blogging). Note only did Jamie McGinn get called up to the San Jose Sharks, he also scored his first NHL regular season goal as the hot Sharks chomped on the Stanley Cup champions. He earned the game's first star honours for his efforts (goal and an assist).

Congrats Jamie!!

Here's the San Jose annoucement on the call-up.

Here's the game summary from the Sharks website.

Here's the video of his success:

Where Are They Now?

Got curious about past 67s and spent some time looking them up. The most curious player tracking is that of Jason Bailey. According to the AHL List of Transactions, Jason was sent down to the Bakersfield Condors on the 17th. The ECHL List of Transactions has no record of him arriving. And the Bakersfield Condors Roster does not include Jason. Has he gone AWOL? Perhaps it's just a time-lag on getting information up to date (although the transaction lists are current to the 19th). Things that make you go hmmmmm.

Update: Jason is now showing up in the Condor info. As I thought, it was a time lag in getting their information up to date. Here's the updated roster. By all reports, it would have been out of character for him to have done anything else. Here's wishing him every success.

The St. Francis Xavier varsity hockey team has 6 former Ottawa 67s playing: Wil Colbert, Chris Hulit, Robbie Lawrance, Danny Battochio, Jeremy Akeson and Brett Liscombe. Meanwhile the Carleton Ravens have Brodie Beard patrolling the blue line in their second year. And Mattieu Methot is the lone 67s playing for the Ottawe Gee-Gees.

The last of my explorations was to find out where Brad Bonello is. At last report, he was playing for the ECHL Dayton Bombers. This year finds him playing for the Texas Brahmas. in the Central Hockey League.

This league wins for having the most amusing team names:

Amarillo Gorillas
Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs
Corpus Christi Icerays
Mississippi Riverkings
Arizona Sundogs
Colorado Eagles
Laredo Bucks
New Mexico Scorpions
Odessa Jackalopes
Rapid City Rush
Rocky Mountain Rage
Tulsa Oilers
Oklahoma City Blazers
Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees
Texas Brahmas
Wichita Thunder

What you could do with a team name like Killer Bees!

67s, angry pucks and fuzzy raccoons now seem a bit pedestrian don't they.

If you know what some former 67s are up to, drop me a line and we'll share that will the rest of the fans.

Wrong About Couture

Guess I was wrong in my earlier musings about Logan coming back soon. The Sharks made more cuts today and Logan was not among them. Surprisingly, Jamie McGinn was sent back to the baby sharks. If memory serves correctly, he had one, maybe two goals in his games and an assist while Logan has been without any points. I thought McGinn might stay longer. Joslin and Kaspar remain as well.

Hmmmm.

The Sharks news release is here.

From the Sharks Camp...

From the Sharks website:

Duck Hunting In Vegas
Josh Fisher Sep 15, 2008, 12:12 AM EDT

Morris The San Jose Sharks and Anaheim Ducks rookies showed plenty of spirit in the Sharks 4-2 scrimmage victory Sunday evening at the Orleans Arena in Las Vegas. The rival squads will battle again on Monday with a complete game on Tuesday (tickets are available).

Forward Mike Morris scored twice, while Steven Zalewski tallied a goal and assist in the two-goal win for San Jose. Goalie Timo Pielmeier was strong in net, holding Anaheim scoreless for the first 44:43 and finishing with 28 saves on 30 Ducks shots. Center Matt Fornataro also scored in the Sharks victory.

“We saw a lot of good things tonight,” said Worchester Sharks Head Coach Roy Sommer. “We saw some players out there who kicked it into a high gear and made some high level plays. I thought our line of Morris, Zalewski and McGinn was probably the best line on the ice for both teams tonight (my emphasis). Goaltending was stubborn and I thought Timo played well.

“I think what really stood out in my mind tonight was the way the guys stood up for each other,” added Sommer. “If a guy got hit, the other guy would come in and back him up. Early on, you like to see that stuff. It’s a long season and a team that plays like that is a lot of fun to coach.”

The scrimmage started slow as far as the scoring was concerned, but both teams proved feisty. The two rivals combined for more fights than goals through the opening two periods. Left wing Frazer McLaren, a seventh-round pick in 2007(203rd overall), fought Anaheim left wing Jason Bailey in the first period and then took on defenseman Stu Bickel in the second period. San Jose defenseman Mike Moore traded blows with Anaheim winger Josh Britain later in the period before the Sharks tallied the first goal of the night.

2002 first round pick (27th overall) Mike Morris broke the scoreless tie with 58 ticks left in the second, poking in a rebound off a Zach Harnden shot. Anaheim goalie Marco Cousineau could not control the rebound as Morris jabbed the puck across the line.

San Jose extended the lead to 2-0 just 1:49 into the third frame as center Matt Fornataro finished off a crisp, cross-crease pass from left wing Jonathan Bonneau. Anaheim then cut the San Jose lead to 2-1 4:43 into the third period. Defenseman Eric Regan broke Pielmeier’s shutout bid with a wrist shot through traffic that went off the cross bar for the Ducks first score of the night.

Late in the third the Sharks regained their two-goal lead with Zalewski’s tally at 15:37. Sharks defenseman Jason Demers, a seventh round pick in 2008 (186th overall), made a spectacular cross-ice pass from the right wing corner, hitting Zalewski on the back door. The Sharks fifth round pick in 2004 (153rd overall) finished the play by tucking the pass into the back of the Anaheim net. The Ducks kept the game close down the stretch, answering back with their second goal of the night just 1:34 later. Right wing Nathan Day scored off a loose puck in the San Jose slot, trimming the Sharks lead to 3-2.

Morris capped off the night with his second goal of the evening for the 4-2 win, snapping in an empty-net tally with one minute left in regulation.

“I think both teams started off a little slow tonight,” said Zalewski. “I think everyone was just trying to get a feel for things. I think both teams started to get things going offensively in the third. For most of us, this is our first game since last season. I think it was good that things picked up and tomorrow night will be even better.”

McGinn is making his mark.
