Ottawa 67’s Key Dates in the 2013-14 Season

On the eve of the Ottawa 67’s season opener, let’s take a look at some key dates for the team during this upcoming season.

Home game vs Belleville Bulls (Home opener)

The 67’s open up their 2013-2014 OHL regular season by hosting the division rival Belleville Bulls.  Last season the 67’s fell 1-7-0-0 against the Bulls, but there is a bit of new look for both clubs this year.

Home game vs Mississauga Steelheads (Sean Day vs Travis Konecny)

This will be Sean Day’s first appearance in Ottawa to face the team that passed him over at first overall in the 2014 OHL Priority Selection.  After being granted exceptional status, it shocked many when Day dropped in the draft and was not selected until the 4th overall pick.  Instead, the 67’s selected center Travis Konecny out of Elgin-Middlesex.  It is still a debate around the junior hockey world if Ottawa made the right decision.  Only time will tell, but the Ottawa 67’s staff appear to be very confident in their selection so far.

Overage deadline

OHL teams cannot hold more than four overage players on their roster after this deadline (note: only three can suit up).  This does not affect the 67’s at this time and with such a young team, it is very likely that it will.  After the OHL trade deadline in January, this amount decreases to three.

2014 Subway Super Series – OHL edition #1

Approximately 34 OHL players will face the Russian National Junior Team in Game 3 of the series at the GM Centre in Oshawa, ON.  Games 1 & 2 will be hosted by the QMJHL.  Ottawa 67’s players included on the team last season were Cody Ceci, Tyler Graovac and Sean Monahan.  Some players will complete in the games on both days, but others will be selected to only complete in this game.

2014 Subway Super Series – OHL edition #2

Approximately 34 OHL players will face the Russian National Junior Team in Game 4 of the series at the Sudbury Community Arena in Sudbury, ON.  As mentioned above, Ottawa 67’s players included on the team last season were Cody Ceci, Tyler Graovac and Sean Monahan.  Some players will complete in the games on both days, but others will be selected to only complete in this game.  Games 5 & 6 of the series will be hosted by the WHL.

Home game vs Windsor Spitfires (players vs their old team)

Sam Studnicka will face his old team for the first time since being traded in June 2013.  He was traded for Ottawa’s 5th round pick in the 2015 OHL draft.

Remy Giftopoulos will return to face the 67’s for only the second time after being traded near the deadline in February last season.  Giftopoulous was sent to the Spitfires in exchange for two draft picks. His only meeting against the 67’s last season was in Ottawa where he posted a goal and an assist.

Steven Janes returns to face the 67’s for the first time in a Spitfires uniform.  He was traded from the 67’s to the Owen Sound Attack at the trade deadline last season.  Janes went pointless in his only game against the 67’s last year.  Being the odd man out for his overage season, Attack traded him to the Spitfires in the off-season.

Thursday, January 9, 2014
Away game @ Windsor Spitfires (players vs their old team)

Sam Studnicka will face his old team for the first time in Windsor since being traded in June 2013.  He was traded for Ottawa’s 5th round pick in the 2015 OHL draft.

NOTE: Remy Giftopoulos face the 67’s for only the third time after being traded in February 2013.  Steven Janes also faces the 67’s for the third time after being traded to Owen Sound and subsequently Windsor in 2013.
